Elimu

Elimu promotes projects, initiatives, interventions in the field of on-line education, paying particular attention to the matters regarding both the digital divide and the access and use of technologies. It is born to build a network and to improve/emphasize the professional experience and the know-how of the founders.

The mission is the development of locally sustainable literacy environments in order to give people opportunities to express their ideas and point of view, to engage them in effective learning, to participate in communication, to exchange information and to share knowledge with others.

Elimu is a kiswahili word meaning education, knowledge and learning. The name has been chosen referring to the first activity the founders have been involved in. The activity is linked to a project of ITC literacy in a rural area of Kenya.

Projects

1. The Nyandiwa Project

Elimu designed a project for local development in a rural area of Kenya on the banks of Lake Victoria. The project has the objective of consolidating the use of new technologies for the development and implementation of training and economic activities and of local community services. In the last few years, the awareness of the importance of diffusing technologies and instruments in areas of the world which are “disadvantaged” has begun to become a need. This beginning agrees with the objective of reducing the digital divide between north and south of the world. In collaboration with the Fondazione Browsnea, Elimu began a preliminary study on the educational projects in Kenya which use ICT and an analysis of the needs and local resources. Furthermore, the association was responsible for a distance and in-class learning project for a group of teachers in the Gwassi schools.

2. “e-Learning Africa 2007” Conference

Elimu participated in the 2nd international conference on ITC for development, e-Learning Africa 2007, held in Nairobi May 28-30, 2007. Photographic documentation is available in the resource section of the web website.

3. Collaboration with the Centro Audiofonologico of the Province of Venice

For the Centro Audiofonologico of the Province of Venice, elimu collaborates on the design and realization of promotional and didactic materials on the topic of accessibility and the use of the new technologies.
